Ian Franklin stood in the dock at York Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday, August 20) charged with murdering Greg Marshall, 35.
Franklin, of Roche Avenue, was also charged with possession of a bladed article.
The 33-year-old, wearing a grey sweatshirt as he appeared alongside a dock officer, indicated that he would plead not guilty when the case appears at Leeds Crown Court tomorrow.
Franklin was not asked to enter a formal plea as the alleged offences are too serious to be dealt with by a magistrates’ court.
District Judge Adrian Lower said he had no power to make an application for Franklin’s bail, adding that one can be made tomorrow in Leeds.
A second man also appeared in court one charged with affray and possession of a bladed article in relation to Mr Marshall’s death.
He made no indication of a plea.
The 33-year-old appeared in the dock wearing a grey sweatshirt flanked by two dock officers.
Judge Lower sent the case to Leeds Crown Court where it will be heard tomorrow.
The court heard that the man does not intend to apply for bail.
Mr Marshall died following an incident in Bell Farm in York on Saturday (August 17).
Before the two men appeared in court, Mr Marshall’s family paid tribute to him.
“It’s with the deepest sadness that we as a family are having to announce the sudden passing of Greg Marshall, our beloved son, father, husband, brother, uncle and loyal friend to many far and wide,” they said in a statement released by North Yorkshire Police.
“Our hearts are broken and we ask that you please respect our privacy whilst we process this tragedy.
“If you have any information regarding Greg’s death we ask you to contact North Yorkshire Police.”
