Bowers & Wilkins speakers exude high quality craftmanship – you’ll never mistake one of B&W’s speakers for ever looking cheap, and as this 707 model sits in the Prestige range, this is as far from ‘cheap-looking’ as you can get.

Handsome is the word to describe the 707 Prestige Edition. It’s only available in one finish – Santos Gloss – which gives the speaker a luxury feel that almost makes me not want to touch it in case I smudge it. Inspired by the Santos Rosewood used for the 805 D3 Prestige Edition, it’s made from 12 layers of paint and lacquer, so you really, really don’t want to chip it.

A black grille is provided to cover the speaker drivers for a more minimalist look, but if you ask me, covering up the drivers would make this speaker look less interesting.

Around the back is B&W’s Flowport to help manage bass levels while the terminals are said to have high purity, brass-core terminals. There is a stand, but I’m told the 707 Prestige Edition is happy to sit on any stand and that it doesn’t confer any specific improvements to sound quality.

The driver set-up is a 25mm Decoupled Carbon Dome tweeter, while the midrange is the 130mm Continuum cone bass with the aforementioned Flowport around the back for managing bass levels in a room.

Compared to the ‘standard’ 707 S3 Signature, the Prestige Edition carries the same tweeter, woofer and specs – the main points of difference is in the finish and the terminals, with the Prestige featuring terminals that carry more ‘pure’ brass in them for better conduction and lower distortion.

The frequency range of the speaker stretches from 45Hz to 33Hz in terms of the signals it can accept, while the stated frequency response covers a 50Hz to 28Hz range in terms of what the 707 Prestige Edition can cover.

The recommended power from an amplifier can be as low as 30W to as high as 100W, with B&W recommending a ‘nominal’ impedance of 8 ohms (or a minimum of 4 ohms). Sensitivity is rated at 84dB and this Prestige Edition supports bi-wiring through its terminals.

Sound Quality

As a point of comparison, there’s a 607 bookshelf speaker that’s also in attendance to hear the difference between B&W’s more affordable (and well-regarded) standmount and the 707 Prestige Edition – and there’s a considerable gulf between them.

The 707 Prestige Edition tonally sounds truer, the resolution of the sound is several steps up: clearer, more detailed, more insightful with more punch and a bass response from a similar-sized cabinet that’s much stronger and carries more weight. It’s a confident upgrade over the entry-level model – and rest assured that if you park your money here, you’ll be rewarded with a more confident and assured sound.

Judged on its own and the 707 Prestige Edition does seem sensitive to the source of your choice, which depending on your perspective can be either a good thing or a not so good thing. Good in that the 707 Prestige Edition can reflect the nature and character of the source without prescribing its own sound on top. What’s in your CD, your vinyl, your stream is revealed through the speakers.

Less good in that if you’re someone who chops and changes and wants a consistent sound, this speaker doesn’t necessarily behave when you want it to.

Qobuz through these speakers can sound a little bright but regardless of the source, clarity, resolution of music and tone impress – this is a speaker that expresses itself in a natural manner – distortion isn’t a factor across the frequency range, with more fidelity here than you’d find on less expensive models in the Bowers family.

Highs are treated to engaging levels of clarity and insight – Andreas Ihlebaek’s Come Summer can be a tricky track to reproduce, but the highs sound clear, detailed and bright as the speaker manages to convey the more delicate aspects of the high frequencies without descending into harshness.

The speaker’s feel for dynamism ratchets itself up from quiet to loud easily, the 707 Prestige Edition shows it can convey small and subtle moments as well as going big, bold and loud.

Bass is weighty and slightly rich in tone but also balanced. There are songs where I feel it could be bigger – the Last Dinner Party’s Nothing Matters and Phoebe Bridgers’ Garden Song feel as if they could utilise a bit more bass power and assertiveness – but for a cabinet of its size the low frequencies make a strong impression.

It can’t travel down deep and do big bass – a play of Childish Gambino’s This is America, Hard Life’s Skeletons, and Gabriels Taboo shows that for bigger bass you’d need a bigger speaker, but if standmount is as big as you’re willing to go, the 707 Prestige Edition’s low end performance feels sufficient for its type of design and size.

The midrange is perhaps the best aspect of the speaker’s performance. Whether it’s Sinatra’s distinctive vocals in Fly Me to the Moon, Bridgers’ in Garden Song, or Veronica Swift’s in The Man I Love, the Bowers is an articulate performer, revealing all the nuance and detail in their voices with a lovely sense of naturalism on top.

It’s not a speaker that necessarily sounds neutral, but it can be lively and enthusiastic or slow and steady when it needs to. Whether it’s dealing with a stream, vinyl or a CD, its versatility stands out. It handles any track I fire at it with aplomb.

The soundstage and imaging is also super, opening up for an expansive sound that at times almost feels as if the sound was wrapping around me; the width is far bigger than I expected from the cabinet of its size, a case if there ever was one of the speakers disappearing and leaving only sound behind.

There’s always a degree of control with these speakers, and that’s despite changing the electronics powering and supplying it from a Marantz Model 50 and CD50n to a Rotel A14 MkII, the Bowers & Wilkins 707 Prestige Edition always feels as if it’s in the driver’s seat.

A dense vinyl record by Charles Mingus and the 707 Prestige sifts through the detail without sounding like indecipherable mush, communicating the liveliness and changes in tempo without tying itself up in knots. This standmount speaker stands out as one of the best listens of 2026 for me. An absolute treat to listen to.
