One of many frustrated drivers who have been in touch with The Press, and who didn’t want to be named, said: “Commuting to work from Tadcaster to the Designer Outlet has become a nightmare.”
Another said they had been driven to write to National Highways for an explantion.
In response a spokeswoman said: “We understand how frustrating lane closures can be. We truly sympathise with the disruption to traffic in this location as a result.
“A recent incident occurred where an errant vehicle hit the barrier at the side of the road. The damage caused means there’s insufficient capacity in the barrier to fully protect the area should another similar incident occur.
“The barrier is a bespoke asset and not one available from stock, therefore the replacement parts have had to be made to order. We are aiming to complete this work by the end of September.
“We didn’t take the decision to close the lane lightly as we understand the importance of this junction and how busy it is; however, we must put the safety of road users above all else. We hope you understand and thank you for your patience whilst this situation is ongoing.”
