Your First Week Home Decides How Long Your Trip Lasts

There’s a particular flatness that arrives somewhere between the baggage carousel and the front door. You had a good time, you’re full of sunshine and unfamiliar food, and now you’re standing in a cold hallway looking at a pile of mail and a suitcase you can’t face opening.

Most people get this. It has a predictable shape and a predictable length, and researchers have measured both. What you do in the seven days after you land has more effect on how much of the trip you keep than anything you did while you were away.

The Post-Vacation Slump Runs on a Clock

The research here is unusually blunt. In a study of 96 Dutch workers tracked across seven weeks, health and wellbeing improved during the vacation on five separate measures, including mood, energy, tension and satisfaction. All of it had returned to pre-trip levels during the first week back at work. The paper is called “Lots of Fun, Quickly Gone.”

A larger review published in 2023 found the same shape across dozens of studies. Wellbeing rises on vacation, then shows no meaningful difference from pre-trip levels after the first week back. The reviewers’ practical conclusion was that longer trips don’t fix this. Several shorter breaks spread through the year hold the benefit better than one long one.

A Dutch survey of 1,530 adults found something even less comfortable. Vacationers were happier than the people who stayed home, but mostly before they left. Afterward the two groups looked much the same, unless the trip had been genuinely relaxing, in which case the lift lasted around two weeks and was gone by eight.

None of that means the trip was wasted. It means the fade is normal, it’s fast, and the week you land is the only week where you have real leverage over it.

Take shorter trips throughout the year, like a camping weekend trip to reset in nature

Buy Yourself a Day

Don’t fly home Sunday night and start work Monday morning. That’s the most expensive scheduling decision in the whole trip, and it costs nothing to avoid.

Come back a day early instead. One day covers the laundry, the grocery run, a full night’s sleep and the slow business of remembering where you keep things. Book it as part of the trip rather than treating it as a bonus you might get if everything runs smoothly. If you can’t move the flight, take the day off anyway and don’t tell anyone you’re back.

Fix Your Body Clock Before Anything Else

Sleep is where the slump does most of its damage. It’s also the part you can correct fastest.

If you crossed time zones

Direction matters more than distance. The CDC’s Yellow Book puts the average rate of adjustment at roughly 1.5 hours a day flying west and 1 hour a day flying east, which is why one leg of the same trip flattens you and the other doesn’t. Your internal clock runs slightly longer than 24 hours, so stretching a day is easy and shortening one is work.

Light does most of the resetting. After flying east, get outside in the morning and keep the evening dim. After flying west, do the opposite: stay away from bright light early and get more of it late in the day. Well-timed light shifts the clock by about an hour a day, so a five-hour difference is a five-day project rather than an overnight fix.

If you didn’t

The problem is simpler. You went to bed late for two weeks and slept in. Get up at your normal time on the first morning even though it will be unpleasant, get twenty minutes of daylight within an hour of waking, and go to bed at your usual hour instead of collapsing at six in the evening. Two consistent days usually does it.

Keep the room cool while you’re at it. The Sleep Foundation puts the useful range at 65 to 68°F, roughly 18 to 20°C, which is colder than most people keep a bedroom in the week they get back from somewhere warm.

Get up at your normal time on the first morning

The Bed Test Only Works Right Now

For a week or two you slept on someone else’s mattress. Now you’re back on your own, holding a direct comparison you won’t have again for another year. Use it.

The Sleep Foundation lists sleeping better in hotels and other people’s houses as one of the standard signs that a mattress is finished, alongside visible sagging and waking up stiff. Its general guideline is replacement somewhere between six and eight years, adjusted for the material and how hard the mattress has been used. Almost nobody sticks to that. Better Sleep Council consumer research points to closer to a decade in practice, with most people waiting until the mattress is visibly deteriorating.

So give it three or four honest nights, then ask two questions. Did you sleep better away than you do at home? Has that been true for a while now? If the answer is yes twice, looking at beds designed for a better night’s sleep is a more useful response than blaming the flight for another month. The first week back is when you’ll actually notice the difference. By week three you’ll have adapted to the sag again and stopped registering it.

Empty the Suitcase, Fill the Fridge

Unpack immediately. Open luggage in the hallway is a running signal to your brain that you haven’t properly arrived yet, and it takes half an hour to silence. Laundry on, floor clear.

The kitchen is the same problem in a different room. Walking in to an empty fridge and nothing for breakfast turns your first morning into an errand before the day has started. Leave a few basics in the freezer before you go, or time a delivery for the afternoon you land. A decent meal at home on the first evening does more for your mood than the effort suggests it should.

Go Back to Work at Half Speed

Block the first morning for the inbox and nothing else. Deal with what’s genuinely urgent, write the rest down for later in the week, and accept that you won’t be at full speed on day one. Everyone who has ever come back from a trip knows what a first day back looks like.

This is also where the research points. The fade-out in all of those studies lines up with the return to work, not with the flight. A first day of forty emails and no meetings buys you more of the trip than a first day spent proving you never left.

Anticipation Is the Part That Lasts

Here’s the useful finding buried in the Dutch happiness data. The largest and most reliable boost came before the trip, from looking forward to it, and for many people it started weeks or months out.

So the fastest way out of the slump is to give yourself something to look forward to again, and it doesn’t have to be big or expensive. A weekend two hours away. Dinner with friends in three weeks. A concert in the fall. Put it in the calendar within the first week back, while you still remember why it matters. If you’re choosing the next one properly, it’s worth planning around how you want to feel rather than where you think you should go.

Keep one thing from the trip as well: the walk after dinner, breakfast at a table instead of a desk, reading instead of scrolling before bed. One habit, kept, is what stops the whole thing evaporating.

The First Week, In Order

Day 0, landing day. Unpack and get the laundry going. Put something in the fridge for the morning. Get outside if there’s daylight left, and go to bed at your normal time however tempting the alternative.

Day 1, the buffer day. Normal wake-up time. Outside within the hour. Nothing scheduled.

Days 2 to 4. Same wake time every morning, including the weekend. Run the bed test on the third or fourth night, while the comparison is still fresh.

Day 5 onward. Put the next thing in the calendar. Keep the one habit going.

Week 2. If your sleep is still broken and your mood hasn’t lifted, the cause probably isn’t the trip anymore. Worth mentioning to a doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the post-vacation slump usually last?

For most people the flat feeling lifts within a week or two, once sleep and routine have settled. The wellbeing research shows the measurable vacation effect gone within roughly a week of returning to work, which is a different thing from low mood that sticks around. If broken sleep, low mood or loss of interest is still there after two or three weeks, raise it with a doctor rather than waiting it out.

Is it better to fly home on a Friday or a Sunday?

Friday, if the fare difference is tolerable. It gives you two days to unpack, sleep and restock before your first day back at work, which is exactly where the benefit of a trip tends to disappear. Sunday night arrivals compress all of that into a few hours.

How do I get over jet lag faster once I’m home?

Timed daylight does most of the work. After flying east, get morning light and keep evenings dim. After flying west, avoid bright light early and get more of it in the evening. Expect roughly an hour of adjustment per day, slightly faster westbound, and hold the same wake time every morning even while the nights are still bad.

Does taking a longer vacation prevent the slump?

No. The 2023 review of vacation studies found trip length had little effect on how long the benefit lasted. Several shorter breaks through the year performed better than one long one, which is a decent argument for booking the next thing early instead of saving everything for one big trip.

Why do I sleep better in hotels than at home?

Novelty explains part of it, and hotel rooms tend to be cool, dark and free of clutter. If it happens consistently though, the Sleep Foundation counts it among the signals that a mattress has passed its useful life, particularly once it’s more than six or seven years old.
