Now officers in York will be going on live TV to appeal for information in the wake of the spate of gold thefts.
On Friday, March 21, officers will be on BBC Crimewatch Live. They will be highlighting investigations into 10 burglaries that have occurred at properties in the east side of York, all of which involve gold jewellery.
The force said the first theft occurred on Saturday, January 21, and most recent was last Sunday (March 16).
“All the victims are predominantly of Asian heritage,” a police spokesperson said. “It’s believed that addresses are being targeted and the suspect(s) are using surveillance to scope out the property prior to committing the break-in.
“In Fulford, one victim had over £100,000 worth of gold stolen. This property was also sentimental as the jewellery had been accumulated over generations by the victim’s daughter and it was due to be worn at her up-coming wedding.
“In a separate incident a further victim had a suitcase stolen which contained £6,000 in cash, £6,000 worth of jewellery and further sentimental items including his deceased wife’s death certificate.”

A CCTV image, which was captured at one of the burglaries in Kirkham Avenue in Heworth, has been released.
Officers are urging anyone who has any information which will help them identify the person pictured on CCTV to come forward, as the person may have information that will assist their investigation.
Detective chief inspector Shaun Page, of North Yorkshire Police, said: “This spate of gold burglaries is concerning, and a full investigation is underway. I believe that there is information within the local community that will help us, and I’m hopeful that tomorrow’s appeal on BBC’s Crimewatch will generate positive lines of enquiry.
“In the meantime, our neighbourhood policing team is working closely with our local communities to issue crime prevention advice.
“I would urge anyone who has gold within their property to be aware that the price of gold has recently surged, please think about simple steps that you can take to deter thieves away from your property.”
Those who can help the investigation are asked to email carl.barnes@northyokrshire.police.uk. Alternatively, please call North Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote log 287 of 19.03.2025 / Op Attraction.
