Around 30 campaigners were joined by York Central MP Rachael Maskell for the demonstration in St Helen’s Square on Saturday (August 9).
They held a silent vigil of 40 minutes to remember those killed in the USA bombings in August 1945.
Ginnie Shaw, a York-based member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament who helped organise the vigil, said: “We are one in solidarity with the hibakushas [Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors] in striving for the elimination of nuclear weapons as the best we can do for those who died and those who were permanently injured 80 years ago today.”
The United States launched the Nagasaki attack on August 9, 1945, killing 70,000 by the end of that year, three days after the bombing of Hiroshima that killed 140,000.
Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945, ending the Second World War and the country’s nearly half-century of aggression across Asia.
