Shopmobility York, which has long been a vital resource for those with mobility challenges, is urgently seeking individuals to fill these important roles.
The charity, which offers wheelchairs, scooters, and other mobility aids, has helped countless people, including the elderly and those with disabilities, to explore the city with independence.
However, the charity’s future is now at risk unless new trustees come forward to help guide its work.
Trustees are crucial for overseeing the charity’s governance, financial management, and strategic direction.
Without them, the charity may struggle to continue its operations.
The need for trustees is not unique to Shopmobility York, as an article by Community First Yorkshire highlights a national shortage with 90,000 vacancies across the UK.
The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) has also identified a “trustee recruitment crisis,” emphasising the difficulty charities face in attracting individuals to these roles.
Jo Ellis from Shopmobility York said: “Shopmobility York isn’t just about equipment; it’s about giving people the freedom to live their lives fully.
“We’re calling on the community to help us find passionate individuals who can lend their expertise and time to ensure this vital service continues.”
Steve Brown, a staff member and volunteer, added: “It’s a great little charity that more people need to know about.
“We need people to help promote us, as well as someone with experience in simple mechanics to help with the minor maintenance of our equipment, like fixing punctures and changing batteries.”
The charity is keen to hear from individuals with skills in finance, fundraising, marketing, or community engagement.
No prior trustee experience is required—just a commitment to making a difference and a willingness to learn.
Training and support will be provided.
They are particularly eager to welcome younger people as trustees, who can bring fresh perspectives and energy.
Becoming a trustee is not only an opportunity to support a crucial local cause but also a chance to develop new skills, meet like-minded people, and make a lasting impact on the community.
As a trustee, you’ll be part of a team that helps shape the future of Shopmobility York and ensures that it continues to serve those who need it most.
If you’re interested in becoming a trustee or learning more about the role, please contact Shopmobility York at enquiries@shopmobilityyork.org.uk or visit their website.
The charity welcomes inquiries from all and is particularly eager to hear from people with lived experience of mobility challenges.
