My air fryer whole chicken recipe is crispy on the outside and juicy and moist in the middle. It’s a fast and easy way to cook an entire chook! This method has become my family’s go-to shortcut for Sunday roast.
If my family could enjoy their favorite takeout chicken and chips every night, they would, but I have one delicious trick up my sleeve that stops them: my air fryer whole chicken.
Air frying a whole chicken is a great idea if you want to enjoy a tender and juicy chicken with extra crispy skin. It’s similar in timing to my Instant Pot whole chicken, but the skin is just THAT much more crispy.

- Salt and pepper. To season.

The exact cooking time depends on both the size of your air fryer and your air fryer model. From my testing, a 3-pound chicken is the sweet spot: it fits most standard basket-style air fryers and cooks evenly without drying out. Larger birds work too, but make sure there’s enough space for air to circulate the chicken, or the skin won’t crisp properly. Here are my tested guidelines when cooking at 400°F:
- 3-4 pound chicken: 40-50 minutes
- 4-5 pound chicken: 50-55 minutes
- 5-6 pound chicken: 55-60 minutes
Tip: Use a meat thermometer. Cooking times are a guide, but the only reliable way to check doneness is with a meat thermometer. Once the thickest part of the chicken (usually the breast) reaches 165°F, it’s ready to carve and serve.
Chef tips for perfect air fryer roast chicken
- Truss for even cooking. In culinary school, I was taught to always truss a whole chicken before roasting- it keeps the bird compact, allowing it to cook evenly and stay juicy. All it means is tying the legs together with kitchen twine and tucking the wings underneath (like in my pictures and recipe video below).
- Check with a thermometer. Don’t rely only on timing- every air fryer is a little different. The chicken is ready once the thickest part of the breast reaches 165°F.
- Consider brining. For extra moisture and flavor, brine the chicken for several hours or overnight in a mix of water, sugar, and salt (4 cups water, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1/4 cup salt). This step isn’t essential, but when I’ve brined, the meat has been noticeably more tender.
- Rest before carving. Let the chicken sit for at least 5 minutes after cooking. This allows the juices to redistribute, keeping the meat moist when sliced.
