Claudia Winkleman returns with the third series of the BBC1 reality show today (New Year’s Day), alongside 25 faithful and traitors who will spend the next few weeks living in a Scottish castle.
The show sees the ‘faithful’ try to work out who among them are secretly ‘traitors’ while trying to avoid being murdered. Avoid being eliminated by their fellow players and they could win a share of £120,000.
Alex, a care home manager from Whitby, applied after his mother-in-law suggested he could be good on the show.
The 29-year-old hopes to start IVF with his wife if he wins the money.

He said: “I observe a lot, I’m quite good at cataloguing things. I might appear to be just having fun, but I am taking everything in.
“I think some things will definitely hinder me. Sometimes I cannot help myself but say something. I’m always the one that fights for the underdog, I will speak my mind, it’s how my mum brought me up. If you’re going to start being really opinionated, right at the beginning then your head’s on the chopping block straight away.
“I don’t think you can go in with a game plan and stick to it rigidly. I think my broad game plan is to play it a bit stupid and be the nice guy. Try and have a laugh when people get their barriers down and just kind of see what I can pick up even in subtle conversation. That’s what I hope to do, now watch me go in there and do none of that!
“There’s part of me that is hoping to be a Traitor because I feel like the chances of getting to the end are a lot better if you’re a Traitor. I think that I can cope with the pressure, I think I’ll be able to do it and there would be a slight relief to be a Traitor perhaps.”

Host Claudia Winkleman has teased some changes which she hopes will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
She said: “I would love to tell you all about series three, but then I will get fired so I can tell you absolutely nothing. What I will tell you is that things are different this year. There are some really exciting things that have changed, which keeps everyone on the toes and feeds into the central premise of trust. I can’t wait for everyone to see.”
The Traitors will air on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights at 9pm, with the exception of January 1 and 2 when it will air at 8pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
