hankfully, January has tapped out and some of us are still fired up about our 2024 health goals. If you’ve fallen short, get back up and keep going. Perfection is a facade. The aim is to develop a healthier lifestyle that includes cutting back on certain foods and drinks. One prominent trend in this regard is switching regular drinking water to something called “structured water.” Also known as hexagonal water, gel water or cluster water, you may be wondering––what exactly is structured water?
Could this enigmatic liquid be better than plain old H2O? Is it just another trend, a passing scam or an innovative lifestyle game changer? Let’s find out if structured water deserves a place in our glass.
So what is structured water?
Unlike distilled or purified water, structured water is just normal H2O, except the molecules are reportedly reorganized into neat, compact structures that resemble natural spring water. Its alias, “hexagonal water” refers to a cluster of water molecules, forming a hexagonal shape––that supposedly enhances nutrient absorption, enhances cellular communication, and removes metabolic wastes, among other benefits. This molecular arrangement gives structured water superior hydration abilities compared to disorganized tap or bottled water molecules.
How is structured water made?
How are molecules reorganized to make structured water? It’s pretty nifty. Scientists use unique vortex filters that guide and spin the water into an aligned formation as it passes through a canister. The filter doesn’t remove any good minerals already present, like calcium or magnesium, which is awesome. Standard filters strip everything out, but these special options gently spin it all into a structured state. Makes me imagine little molecules giggling as they go for a wacky ride.

The vortex filtration process is also completely safe and simply reorganizes existing minerals as nature intended – so there’s likely no harm in testing it yourself. While not yet scientifically confirmed, this water appears to offer lots of potential hydration benefits using an all-natural approach. For optimal health this new year, it may deserve a place in our water cooler.
Structured water vs. distilled water
Unlike distilled water, which is boiled and condensed to remove impurities, structured water still contains existing minerals. It has simply been reorganized. Supporters claim this feature makes structured water superior for hydration and mineral absorption compared to fully distilled variations.
Distillation also supposedly damages the molecular bonds that give water its hydration abilities. “Team structured water” argues that vortex filtering methods leave these bonds perfectly intact through gentle realignment. Hence, some people report superior hydration and electrolyte retention from this water.
However, distillers counter that completely purifying water via distillation removes harmful contaminants and chemicals found in most tap and bottled sources. While structured water may hydrate cells efficiently, distilled varieties offer pure H20 free of toxins.
Structured water vs. tap and bottled water
Since it contains existing minerals, structured water avoids the flat, lackluster taste of distilled varieties. But how does it stack up against standard tap and bottled sources? Tap water contains remnants of chemicals used for purification, like chlorine and fluoride compounds. Bottled water sits under heat and plastic for shipping. Supporters argue vortex filtering of structured water is gentler with no chemicals introduced.
However, advanced filters can remove impurities from tap water almost as effectively. And bottled mineral water also contains naturally occurring electrolytes considered beneficial. While structuring may uniquely reorganize molecules compared to other processes, high-quality filters and mineral water could provide similar hydration. Yet for those looking to avoid chemicals or plastic waste, structured water provides a potentially superior eco-friendly option.
