Tribe Fitness in Clifton Moor is one of 10 finalists in the contest after readers nominated hundreds of favourites on an online voting platform.
Starting from Monday, January 20, voting slips are appearing in The Press newspaper for 12 consecutive days – allowing readers to pick their winner before voting closes on February 1.
Each copy of The Press has been featuring a short profile on each business and why it thinks it deserves to be voted number one in York.
Readers can vote for the Best Gym 2025 by picking up a voting slip, found in copies of The Press newspaper every day, with the winner set to be announced in the coming weeks.

Speaking to The Press, owners Kerry Walker and Jess Baker said: “We got the keys to our gym in March 2020, just before we went into lockdown.”
The pair met whilst working at a commercial, chain gym, where they “decided we wanted something more for ourselves and our clients.”
They added: “The big gyms are fine, but it’s easy to get lost being just a number, and that was becoming more apparent where we were. The other small gyms out there seemed to only be CrossFit or bootcamps, so we wanted our gym to offer the classes you’d get at big gyms, like indoor cycle and body pump, and bring them into a small community environment.
“We keep our classes small, everyone gets their own space and equipment, and we’re still cleaning everything after each class.”

The team at Tribe said they know each member by name, and said “everyone is encouraged to be themselves”.
“It’s hard work and long days, but we love what we do,” they added.
“A lot of other gyms say similar things to what we do – which is awesome as the world needs more places like us. What we offer more than other places is a rounded experience.
“We’re both qualified in sports massage as well as personal training, so as well as training you, we can also help you if you get an injury. Our goal is to help people to enjoy exercise and build confidence, not crawl out of the gym in a puddle of sweat and ache for three days after.
“We know what we’re doing, and we’ve fought hard to build what we have, which is a safe space for people to train without judgement.”
