Dave Filoni’s Mandalorian movie is suddenly not the only big screen outing based on the Star Wars property that fans will see in the coming years. It has been announced that Din Djarin and Grogu will be getting their own movie from writer/director Jon Favreau, which will go into production this year.
Following several years without a Star Wars movie, fans will now have four movies to look forward to, as Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu has officially been added to a slate that includes Filoni’s movie, which will act as the culmination of the Mandalorian era, and movies by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and James Mangold that were previously announced. Additionally, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie is also somewhere in the mix, although its status is currently hard to pin down, with only the writer/director himself having commented on it recently.
In a statement about his new venture into the Star Wars universe, Favreau said of The Mandalorian & Grogu:
I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy added her thoughts on the latest addition to the ever-expanding world of Star Wars:
Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.
The Mandalorian Has Delivered Strong Results for Star Wars
The last Star Wars movie to hit theaters was Star Wars: Episode 9 – The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Despite being the culmination of the “sequel” trilogy of the main franchise, it was a very mixed bag when it came to reviews. In fact, despite delivering some of the highest box offices of the franchise, all the sequel movies led by Daisy Ridley ended up disappointing part of the fan base for one reason or another.
While one of the biggest problems faced by that trilogy came from a constant change of director and vision, the TV shows of the Mandalorian Era have not had that problem, with the constant presence of Favreau and Filoni driving them forward.
In 2023, despite some of the lowest review scores of the series, The Mandalorian continued to dominate Disney+, and also managed to beat shows like Loki and Netflix’s The Witcher to become the most streamed original series of the year. Additionally, spin-off series Ahsoka continued to successfully blend the past and present, with the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker being a big talking point on social media.
The future of the franchise now seems to be turning back towards a cinematic experience after spending five years exclusively on Disney+. Whether the break will have made fans eager to see the galaxy far, far away on the big, big screen is something that we will find out in the next few years.
