Soccer Mommy‘s Sophie Allison makes her way through “profound and personal loss” on her fourth studio album, Evergreen, which will be released Oct. 25 on Loma Vista Recordings. The project’s second single, “M,” is out now in tandem with a video directed by Anna Pollack and shot on Kodak 8mm film in Laramie, Wy., and Walden, Co.
Evergreen is the follow-up to Allison’s 2022 album Sometimes, Forever. It was co-produced by the artist and Deerhunter/Animal Collective producer Ben H. Allen III and recorded at Maze Studios in Atlanta. Moving away from the synth and digital textures of its predecessor, the album leans on acoustic guitar, flute and strings but also features accompaniment from Allison’s touring band.
Arriving at the album’s sound was a long process which was underway as far back as late 2022. “From record to record you have to find a producer who fits the vibe you’re going for, but I’m stuck right now—I’ve had a lot of ideas sent to me and don’t know what I need yet,” Allison told SPIN at the time.
Soccer Mommy has a handful of concerts on tap through the end of the year, including an Aug. 10 one-off with Sylvan Esso in Beech Mountain, N.C., the New York (Sept. 28) and Washington, D.C. (Sept. 29) editions of the All Things Go festival and a Nov. 1 set at Levitation in Austin.
