The Smashing Pumpkins will release their 13th album, Aghori Mhori Mei, on Aug. 2, and frontman Billy Corgan says it was at least partially inspired by how the band made music in their earliest days.
“In the writing of this new album, I became intrigued with the well-worn axiom, ‘you can’t go home again,’ which I have found personally to be true in form, but thought, well, what if we tried anyway?” he says. “Not so much in looking backwards with sentimentality but rather as a means to move forward — to see if in the balance of success and failure that our ways of making music circa 1990-1996 would still inspire something revelatory.”
The 10-track effort was recorded on and off between touring commitments over the past couple of years. It’s the follow-up to the band’s rock opera ATUM, which was released in three separate installments between November 2022 and May 2023.
The Pumpkins begin a run of stadium shows opening for Green Day on July 29 in Washington, D.C., and will play a handful of headlining dates in Latin America in November.
