A trip to the seaside has been prescribed as a tonic to life’s aliments for centuries now. Walking across sandy shores whether it be blowing a gale or as the sun shines down brightly on us whilst we breathe in the sea air has an undeniably cathartic nature. Harnessing the healing powers of being by the sea, Saltmoore have created a sanctuary that is designed to leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated.
With the entrance just a skimming stone’s throw from sweeping sea vistas of Saltburn, journey deep into the 85-acre estate and notice as you start to feel detached from the world and all its busyness, something that is aided by the loss of phone signal. Of course, there’s high speed WiFi, along with Smart TVs in every room, but the clever positioning of glossy coffee table albums and nostalgic novels that are peppered throughout, give a subtle but seductive nod to embrace going off-grid. Something we should all do more often.
Dine in the Orangerie Bar. Image: Claire Menray Nature, wildlife and wellness are the main focus here which is evident from the offset. Upon reaching reception, an old olive tree stands ceremoniously to greet you as you’re handed a flute of sparkling tea. It’s delicious. But of course it is; all of the ingredients for their bottled concoctions (alcoholic and not) are foraged from the surrounding landscape or brought in from the Oldstead Estate.
The influence of consulting chef Tommy Banks doesn’t stop there, but is especially prevalent in the food. Hearty dishes of Mangalica Cumberland sausages with sage and apple butter mash, along with butter chicken pie, can be found in The Brasserie alongside locally sourced dishes of fried cod cheeks. This is a wellness sanctuary in Yorkshire, after all! The health conscious can head to the Wellness Café down by the spa which serves up everything from bone broths to smoothie bowls and protein shakes – perfect after a session in the state-of-the-art fitness studio. Forget your poxy hotel gyms – this place is a destination in itself.
Eascape life’s stresses at The Sanctuary at Saltmoore. Image: Claire Menray And we haven’t even touched upon the spa! The Sanctuary at Saltmoore is a holistic haven for guests and day-visitors alike. It has an air of Soho House, with striped towels laid perfectly on plush double beds which stretch in pleasing symmetry towards the indoor heated pool. This is flanked by a Himalayan salt block sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi. Hot on the wellness trend of contrast therapy, there’s also a Brass Monkey Ice Bath and a cryotherapy chamber that burns up to 800 calories a session – it’s worth booking in for that reason alone!
A range of tempting treatments incorporate Wildsmith Skin’s utterly gorgeous products that are designed to transform skin. Continue the pamper party in your room where you’ll find the products next to your roll top bath or rainfall shower – you could even create bubbles in your very own outdoor tub.
