Keir Mather, MP for Selby, reached the milestone this week, saying it confirms a pledge when he was elected to be an ‘active and accessible local MP.’
Mr Mather won Selby and Ainsty for Labour in July 2023, taking the former safe Conservative seat, which had been held by long-serving Conservative MP Nigel Adams, but he stood down forcing a by-election.
Aged just 25, he overturned a 20,137 Tory majority, replacing it with a 4,161 Labour majority, becoming the ‘Baby of the House’ as Westminster’s youngest MP.

Since then, Mr Mather says he has spoken to more than 15,000, delivered speeches in his first year at 2.5 times the rate of his predecessor and in 2024 attended more than 100 constituency events.
The MP was returned to Westminster for the new Selby constituency last July, taking the seat with a 10,195 majority, becoming an assistant whip in the new Keir Starmer-led Labour government.

Whilst MPs primarily function as legislators, they also have an important role to play as local campaigners and champions for their constituency.
After his election in 2023, Mr Mather relocated the local MP’s constituency office from Tadcaster to Selby, the first time it has been there for 13 years. He has his team have since helped thousands of local people with a wide range of issues.
Keir Mather said: “I got into politics to make a real difference to people’s lives. As an MP, I see it as my duty to be rooted in my constituency, working tirelessly to improve people’s lives.
“Reaching this milestone is an important moment, and I am grateful to the thousands of local people who have trusted me and my team to represent their concerns and fight for their interests.

“The issues constituents raise with me are incredibly varied. From poor access to SEND support, problems with interacting with government departments like HMRC or the DWP, or the daily reality of poor or non-existent bus services. My team and I are passionate about fighting for progress on issues like these which affect families on a daily basis.”
He added: “Every week, I get out to speak to local people, knocking on doors and hosting regular ‘Meet Your MP’ events, where residents can directly share the challenges they are facing. Being accessible in this way is vitally important if we are to rebuild faith in politics as a vehicle for positive change in this country.
“Regardless of your political persuasions, if you have a concern or need assistance, my dedicated team will always be happy to help.
