Ex-Huddersfield Town Player, Roy Ellam, died at the age of 86
The family of ex-Huddersfield Town Player Roy Ellam has briefly closed the gym today to celebrate the life of the “beloved” grandfather, gym owner and football player.
Roy Ellam, who had two stints with the Terriers during his playing days, sadly died at the age of 83 in February 2026. Born in Hemsworth, the defender represented Huddersfield Town during the 1960s and 1970s. Following his retirement from football, Ellam opened the ‘Roy Ellam Premier Health Club’.
Nestled in Mirfield, the family-run gym announced its day-long closure, following arrangements for Ellam’s funeral later today (March 18). The post made to Facebook read: “Our gym is closed today as we celebrate Roy’s life. We will be open as normal tomorrow – Thank you for your understanding.”
Prior to the funeral, the family, who are continuing to run Ellam’s gym in his memory, released a heartfelt thank-you to the community for its support. The post, made in late February, read: “As a family, we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support we have received this week following the passing of our beloved Roy Ellam.
“Reading through the hundreds of heartfelt messages has brought us comfort in our grief. Hearing the many stories of how Roy touched the lives of those around him, and understanding the lasting impact he had as a footballer, landlord, and friend, has meant the world to us. We are truly grateful to everyone who has taken the time to share their memories and kind words. Your support is helping us more than you know.”
