As anticipation builds for the upcoming season of The Rings of Power, fans are eagerly speculating about the return of familiar villains from J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive lore of Middle Earth. Season two is already set to introduce iconic threats such as the Balrog lurking beneath the Dwarven mines of Khazad-dûm, Sauron’s new identity and the strange presence of the Barrow-Wights. Recent interviews with the cast and crew have unveiled another major villain making a comeback: Shelob, the giant spider from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Some new glimpses into the storyline of The Rings of Power Season 2 have been unearthed, and we now know more about the challenges our heroes will face in the upcoming episodes. Maxim Baldry, who plays Isildur, one of Middle-Earth’s central figures in the story which spans thousands of years, hints at the path his character will tread. The journey will take Isildur into the lair of the famous Shelob almost exactly where Sam and Frodo find themselves when they encounter the terrifying arachnid in the third film. Baldry revealed in an interview with EW:
“I’m awoken in a cave and I have to fight my way through Shelob to get to safety, which is an obscene way to start a season. It’s a story of survival and it’s a story about ‘be careful what you wish for.’ He grows from a boy into a man and has to learn who to trust and who not to trust.”
Isildur’s Destiny & the Complexity of His Character in Rings of Power
The last time audiences saw Isildur was in the penultimate episode of Season 2 of The Rings of Power. After Mount Oroduin erupted, Isildur heroically sacrificed himself to save Queen Mirel from a burning building, leaving his fate uncertain. Intriguingly, the finale didn’t offer fans any answers as to what happened to him, setting the stage for a dramatic reveal in Season 2.
Fans of The Lord of the Rings are already aware that Isildur survives the end of Season 1 and the trials that await him. Where the real drama comes in is how The Rings of Power will explore the duality of Isildur’s character, exploring both the darkness and the light within him. After all, this is the man who cut the One Ring from Sauron’s finger mid-battle and failed to destroy it when the time came, ultimately, allowing the events of The Lord of The Rings trilogy to happen.
