The ground and vegetation is very dry after weeks of little or no rain and there have been already been several wildfires in the county this Spring.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service warns wildfires cause serious damage to wildlife and it has to use a lot of its resources to battle them.
A spokesman said: “The sun has reappeared, and you might be wanting to make the most of it with a trip to the countryside.
“Please enjoy the beautiful moors and dales sensibly.
“Don’t have barbecues (or camp fires) on dry grass or moor land. Hot coals and stray sparks could cause a wildfire.”
The service’s code for safety in the countryside is:
- Act responsibly on the Moors, no BBQs, fires, or fireworks
- Dispose of all your rubbish correctly, do not litter
- Report any suspicious activity or call 999 if you see a fire
- Consequences of starting a fire can result in a fine and/or prison
- Wildfires cause serious damage to wildlife and use a lot of resources from the fire service to put out
