Summary
- Madame Web may have a tough task of redeeming Sony’s Spider-Man universe, following the disappointment of previous films.
- Fans have been speculating and creating fan art of what the character could look like, with Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney in the lead roles.
- Sony’s universe of Spider-Man characters has received mixed reviews, but Madame Web could potentially tie everything together if executed well.
Madame Web may have its work cut out for it when Dakota Johnson joins Sony’s Spider-Man universe this Valentine’s Day as the titular character. Following the all-round disappointment of Morbius and the critical mauling of two Venom movies, the upcoming slate of “Spider-Man without Spider-Man” movies coming from Sony have something to prove. However, those hoping for a Spider-Man connection are once again going to go wanting, as director SJ Clarkson has revealed that the movie is set in “a standalone world.”
Fans of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe have been sorely disappointed at the lack of a recognizable web-slinger, and that is something that doesn’t seem to be about to change with Madame Web, and furthermore, it doesn’t seem that there will be connections with previous movies in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe either. Clarkson told Entertainment Weekly:
She’s definitely in a standalone world. I was able to just have free rein and let the movie be what it needed to be, as opposed to trying to force it into something else. That was a gift, in a way, to be able to take something and bring a fresh and I hope original take to it.
Madame Web will not only see Johnson headlining the movie, but also features Sydney Sweeney as the Julia Carpenter iteration of Spider-Woman. While the movie will avoid bringing in any of the three Spider-Men that fans are desperate to see on screen again, graphic designer BenSolo_Cup previously took to Instagram to share an idea of what Madame Web could have looked like if Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire had been involved. Madame Web: Release Date, Plot, Cast and Everything Else We Know
The threads shrouding the upcoming Madame Web film’s details are starting to unfurl, and here’s the detailing of each.
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Has Not Been Well Received.
Despite owning the rights to Spider-Man’s big screen outings for decades, Sony has been struggling to capitalize on Marvel’s best known hero in recent years. Outside their collaborations with Marvel Studios on the MCU’s Spider-Man trilogy, and the surprising perfection of the Spider-verse movies, their track record has been nothing short of a disappointment.
Having made their last Spider-Man-centric movie with Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony have focused on building a universe of characters that have come into contact with Spider-Man in the comic-books. So far, this has included two Venom features, Morbius, and will also include Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web and more. It is certainly not clear whether this story will culminate in the introduction of a new Spider-Man, an old Spider-Man, or another MCU crossover, but unless the next movies in the line-up can turn things around, no one will probably care one way or the other.
