Thinking of going for a relaxing train ride along the North Yorkhire Moors Railway and wondering where the best spots are to get off and explore?
From Goathland to Grosmont and Pickering, there are many scenic villages and towns to visit.
But what do locals think? Someone who was asking for the top spots along the famous track posted on Reddit: “So I think I’ll do one day just getting to Whitby, and another checking out the stations/villages and maybe having tea.
“All the stations are appealing, and it seems like a fun day out to explore the villages – Pickering especially.

“Which has the best tea room?
“Which stations/villages are your favourites? I’m not sure if I’d need to stop off at all of them – maybe 2 or 3?
“I’m a train fan (especially steam), so I feel like I might love Grosmont…”
This has prompted plenty of Yorkshire residents to share recommendations – let’s take a look at the most popular.
Is the North Yorkshire Moors Railway worth it?
In particular, Goathland and Grosmont received the majority of suggestions in the r/Yorkshire subreddit.
Thinking of visiting any of these stations along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway this year? (Image: Daniel J. Rao/Getty) This person commented: “I like Goathland (Mainly because of Harry Potter!) But it also takes me back to watching Heartbeat as a kid, seeing the garage, sheep on the road and a really quant little row of shops.
“Grosmont is also worth a visit, especially down to the engine sheds (with a cup of tea from the station cafe).”
Another shared: “I find the one at Grosmont is the best, and then you can go look at the engine sheds too.”
“Goathland is my favourite. I actually went yesterday,” wrote this account.
This Reddit user suggested: “Walk from Goathland to Beckhole to the waterfall is definitely worth it, and then you really earn your pint/ tea and cake!”
Also in favour of visiting Grosmont which they described as “fab”, one said: “There’s a lovely art gallery over the road from the station called the Geall Gallery and I think you’ll get a coffee in there!”
Elsewhere, this person revealed how to enjoy a “memorable day out” along the North Yorkshire Moors Railway: “Ok so there is no tea shop but the walk from Lewisham [Levisham] halt up the hill to the top is exhilarating if exhausting but the view down is awesome. Come back down get on the train and then stop at Goathland for tea. Bit of walk from the station to the tea rooms but worth it. Memorable day out !”
Meanwhile, a helpful r/Yorkshire member put: “All are lovely, just check the season times as they have stopped running now until the spring. I think there are some trains in January. But check the website.”
