“The people of Leeds have shown huge generosity, which we knew they would,” she said.
“This came out of many conversations with Leeds City Council about the cost of living crisis and how people were really struggling with basics like affording to heat their homes and put food on the table.”
They also collected hats, scarves and gloves as well as winter items for babies, in partnership with Leeds Baby Bank.
Mrs Coupland said: “There’s a kindness and a willingness to share in Leeds as a city and it’s overwhelming, it’s incredible. We are so grateful.”
Although donation points had now closed, they still had about 1,500 coats available to be picked up.
She also thanked those who helped to collect and distribute the clothing.
