After a successful run on HBO, many fans are wondering if Lanterns will be greenlit for Season 2. While it feels inevitable, Lanterns is teasing that it will avoid the trap that sunk Game of Thrones.
By all metrics, Lanterns Season 1 was a hit for HBO. Viewership increased over the season, and the reviews were predominantly positive. Naturally, a second season feels like it will happen, especially with how it ended. Now, DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran has shared a Lanterns Season 2 update. It will only be greenlit if the writers can come up with a “worthy successor to quite a beloved first season of television.”
The Green Lantern Corps are an integral part of DC’s future. Safran is clearly being cautious right now. But his comments are encouraging, because the last thing Lanterns should do is expedite a second season.
Lanterns not rushing into Season 2 is the best thing it can do right now
There are several famous examples of shows that ran into problems after greenlighting a new season and racing toward the finish line. Sticking with HBO, look no further than Game of Thrones. That series learned the hard way about making a season without a blueprint.
Game of Thrones is in the pantheon of successful HBO shows. Those first five to six seasons were excellent television. However, the show ran into trouble when it didn’t have the books to follow and deviated from George R.R. Martin‘s plans.
What made things worse is that the show shortened its final season to six episodes. Instead of taking time to land the plane and end the series on a high note, the writers and cast rushed through the final episodes. As a result, Game of Thrones’ final season has been reviled and rejected by many fans, with the finale which betrayed nearly 10 years of storytelling.
If Lanterns wants to express patience, let it happen. I want shows to come back yearly as much as anyone. However, I would rather Lanterns come back in 18 to 24 months after nailing down a plan than rushing into production to arrive in the fall of 2027.
After the Supergirl debacle, DC desperately needed a hit to get back in the audience’s good graces. Lanterns overperformed and delivered. Greenlighting a new season without a plan would seriously jeopardize that goodwill. Thankfully, Safran and the DC team seem to have the right idea and will show restraint with Lanterns Season 2.
