The perpetually hat-wearing Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has revealed something hugely exciting while doing the press rounds for Deadpool & Wolverine…the next era of the MCU. So far, The Infinity Saga is the name given to the first twenty-three installments of the franchise, while the somewhat less-successful Multiverse Saga came next and is the era we’re currently in. With Avengers: Secret Wars expected to end the latter in 2027, Feige has now revealed that “the Mutant era” is next.
While speaking with The Playlist, Feige shared his excitement over finally being able to use The X-Men and other mutant characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which comes as a result of Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox. While The Multiverse Saga will not officially end for a few years yet, Feige makes it clear that the emergence of mutants will be the next big Marvel trend. And it all really kicks off with Deadpool & Wolverine…
“Also, the ‘after’ is clearly—now that we have characters from the ‘X-Men’ world, the Mutants—we haven’t had access to before. So, this is the beginning of that, and every [movie] post ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ will be the Mutant era coming into the MCU.”

The MCU has already begun to dabble in mutants, with The Marvels featuring a fluffy, blue fan-favorite during a post-credits scene. But, generally, the mutants have been a quiet presence in the franchise. Clearly, according to Feige, this is all going to change, with Deadpool & Wolverine bringing them to the forefront and setting the stage for the era of mutants. Finally.
Deadpool & Wolverine Will Be the Beginning of the Mutant Era in the MCU
With The Multiverse Saga having been less well-received than its predecessor (combined with the fallout from Kang actor Jonathan Majors, who was found guilty of assault and harassment), it makes sense that Marvel would follow this era with something more obviously crowd-pleasing. TheX-Men remains one of the most beloved superhero franchises in comics, with Feige having even teased who we might see on the team when they do show up later on down the line. He recently said to Gizmodo…
“So I think as we always try to do, as we did when we made the arrangement with Sony for Spider-Man , you’ll probably see a mix of characters you’ve seen before and characters you’ve never seen before. I think the success of X-Men ’97 was really exciting for us to see people revisit and reconnect with that world and dare I say, the soap opera elements of that world, which is one of the things that’s so exciting to us about jumping into it finally in the MCU.”
Until then, Marvel fans have the multiversal madness of Deadpool & Wolverine to look forward to. Directed by Shawn Levy from a screenplay he wrote alongside Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells, Deadpool & Wolverine stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as Deadpool and Wolverine, respectively, alongside Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen.
Deadpool & Wolverine
is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase Five of the MCU.
