Before Lionel became famous, Jorge Messi worked as a manager at a steel plant in Rosario. He noticed his son’s special talent early on, when Lionel was still playing at Malvinas for Newell’s Old Boys. The family faced tough times because of Argentina’s severe economic crisis.
Despite these financial struggles, Jorge was determined to get medical treatment for his son’s growth hormone deficiency. When local clubs would not pay for the costly treatment, Jorge searched for help overseas. He took a big risk by arranging a trial with Barcelona in Spain in 2000.
This legendary move eventually altered the entire landscape of modern sports history forever. On a famous paper napkin, Jorge helped secure the initial agreement with Barcelona sporting director Charly Rexach. That singular, unrelenting vision transformed a quiet, diminutive boy from Rosario into a multi-billion-dollar global phenomenon.
Jorge moved from being a protective father to becoming a skilled professional sports agent. He handled all of Lionel’s contracts, from his early days to his recent moves. These included Lionel’s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain and his current deal with Inter Miami.
With his father’s careful guidance, Lionel reached new heights both on and off the field. He won a record eight Ballon d’Or trophies and many major club titles. Jorge also shielded his son from the pressures of fame, helping him stay focused on his game.
The bond between the father and the son extended well beyond standard business agreements. Lionel frequently mentioned that he constantly sought his father’s analytical feedback after every single match he played. He valued Jorge’s honest, critical perspective more than any praise from global sports journalists or passionate fans.
Emotional Tributes from Argentina and Beyond
His childhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, published a very moving statement to honor his incredible memory. They noted that his constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential for Lionel’s historic journey. The club thanked Jorge for teaching his iconic son to love their traditional red and black colors.
Similarly, administrative leaders at CONMEBOL expressed deep, sincere condolences to the grieving Messi family during this time. Football clubs, prominent international players, and millions of fans posted emotional messages across various social media platforms. They praised the quiet man who believed in the legendary player from the very beginning. “My father helped me enormously. He is very critical of me. That made me always want to push myself further,” Lionel Messi said.
This emotional loss provides deep context to Lionel’s recent visible emotions during international matches. He wept openly during the World Cup tournament, later admitting his tears were due to private family difficulties. The family had requested media privacy while Jorge was undergoing intense medical treatment in Argentina.
A Final Quiet Return to Rosario
After competing intensely in recent international tournaments, Lionel immediately flew back to his hometown of Rosario. He prioritized spending valuable, quiet moments with his ailing father before returning to complete major club commitments. Those final personal moments gave the family a peaceful chance to say goodbye to their beloved patriarch.
Jorge Messi leaves behind his devoted wife Celia Cuccittini and four children: Rodrigo, Matias, Maria Sol, and Lionel. His incredible life story resembles a classic cinematic narrative of ultimate dedication, sacrifice, and unparalleled global success. He entered the sports world quietly but leaves it having shaped the greatest football player of all time.
