Jensen Huang’s black leather jacket has become one of the most recognizable garments in technology. The NVIDIA CEO has worn the Tom Ford silhouette as an unofficial uniform for nearly two decades, at product launches, corporate keynotes, and industry trade shows, and in doing so has turned a single garment choice into a piece of visual identity as deliberate and as culturally loaded as any designer logo.
On July 17, 2026, one specific jacket from that wardrobe went under the hammer at Sotheby’s and sold for $960,000. The pre-sale high estimate had been $60,000. The final price was approximately 16 times that figure, reached after 65 bids from 45 different collectors. All proceeds will go directly to the Edge Institute to fund fellowships, academic grants, and research residencies.
The jacket being auctioned was not simply a representative example of Huang’s wardrobe staple. It was worn by him during a 2023 promotional event at Foxconn in Taipei and was personally signed by Huang ahead of the Sotheby’s sale. A Tom Ford black leather jacket in this style typically retails for just under $10,000.
The final price of $960,000 represents a premium of roughly 96 times the retail value, which is a number that says less about the jacket than it does about what Huang has come to represent in the current cultural moment. Artificial intelligence has produced a small number of figures who have achieved a kind of celebrity that transcends their industry, and Huang is the clearest example of that phenomenon in 2026. The jacket is the artifact of that celebrity.
What the Price Actually Reflects

The bidding war, 65 bids from 45 collectors, is the detail that most clearly communicates the demand. A single determined buyer could have reached a high price with fewer bids. Forty-five separate collectors competing across 65 rounds indicates genuine market depth for Huang-associated memorabilia, not a single outlier willing to pay an irrational premium.
The competitive dynamic is what pushed the price from the $60,000 high estimate to nearly $1 million, and it reflects something the auction market for tech memorabilia has been demonstrating consistently over the past several years: physical objects connected to the figures driving the AI era are attracting the same kind of collector appetite that has historically been reserved for sports, music, and film.
Tom Ford’s specific contribution to this story is worth noting. The black leather jacket Huang wears is a high-end luxury product with its own brand identity and its own cultural weight as a garment. Ford’s leather pieces have long commanded premium pricing independent of their celebrity associations. The combination of Ford’s brand equity with Huang’s personal identification with the piece produces a provenance argument that neither element could make alone.
The Edge Institute and Why the Destination Matters
The proceeds going to the Edge Institute rather than to a commercial buyer’s collection gives the auction a dimension that pure memorabilia sales lack. The Edge Institute is a non-profit organization focused on technological innovation, and the funds from this sale will specifically support fellowships, academic grants, and research residencies, the kind of structural investment in human talent that compounds over years rather than producing an immediate visible outcome.
The alignment between the source of the proceeds and their destination is coherent. Huang’s career has been built on exactly the kind of sustained investment in foundational technology research that the Edge Institute supports. A jacket worn at a Foxconn product event in 2023, funding the next generation of technology researchers in 2026, is a lineage that the auction house and the seller clearly understood when they structured the sale. At $960,000, the Tom Ford jacket is now the most expensive piece of tech-adjacent fashion ever sold at auction, and the most purposefully directed one.
