It Follows, David Robert Mitchell’s unique take on the genre – and one of the best horror films of the 2010s – will stream very soon on Max. The 2014 indie horror hit will be available on the streaming service on January 1. Then, fans can revisit the modern classic as they heat their holiday leftovers and browse for their next horror fix.
If Follows tells the story of Jay Height, a young student who goes on a date with her boyfriend, and they end up having sex for the first time. Hugh drugs Jay, who wakes up tied to a wheelchair. Nevertheless, his attitude isn’t entirely menacing. He looks frightened and desperate; Hugh doesn’t want to hurt her.
Hugh explains to Jay that he has given her a disease and that the only way to cure herself is if she sleeps with someone else, passing the “thing” to another person. This disease consists of an entity that will manifest as any person and follow the subject. Judging by Hugh’s fear, what happens if the entity reaches the subject is pretty apparent. Hugh disappears after dropping Jay at her home, and she falls into a rabbit hole of absolute paranoia. Alongside her friends, Jay fights against something she cannot fully comprehend.

January is arguably the perfect time for fans to enjoy this modern horror classic as moviegoers anticipate the much-awaited sequel to It Follows.
It Follows is unlike any other movie in the genre. It’s artsy enough to please fans of the “elevated horror” fad, but it’s also very basic in how it approaches its premise of sexual tension and repression. In the end, it’s all about guilt, sexual experimentation, and being creepily followed by strangers.
It Follows is a nightmare. You’re not supposed to ask many questions about its logic because, in nightmares, you’re not in control, and you may feel guilt manifested in unimaginable monsters. It’s exactly Mitchell’s method when building an intricate story with a restrained premise that can also spawn infinite possibilities of horror elements and tropes.
