Inside Out 2 director Kelsey Mann is already hinting at more explorations into the psyche with a potential third installment. The sophomore film welcomes back familiar emotional avatars, while also introducing new ones as Riley navigates the trials of her teenage years. As the box office forecast is predicting a good run for the sequel, Mann is already setting his sights further.
In Inside Out 2, viewers will traverse through new territories within Riley’s mind, with teenage-specific emotions like Anxiety and Embarrassment adding to the complexity of her inner life. Mann expressed immense excitement for the film’s conceptual depth and the new emotional landscapes, which continue to expand. During his interview with ComicBook, he said:
“I love this world. It’s such a great world to play in, and ideas just kind of come from playing in this world, both for locations and characters. There’s so many ideas not only from the first film, but especially in this one, where I’m like, ‘That’s a really fun, clever idea. I don’t know how it fits into this particular story, but it should be used at some point.'”
In the same interview, Mann shared his creative process and the surplus of ideas that arose during the development of Inside Out 2. One such concept, which did not find its place in the upcoming film, is Procrastination Land—a whimsical yet uncompleted attraction in Riley’s mind, emblematic of teenage delay and indecision.
One of my favorites is a location that we came up with called Procrastination Land,” the director continued. “This is the land I definitely have, especially as a teen. It was a land which had a big sign that said ‘Procrastination Land’ and then it said ‘Coming Soon.’
Mann described this area humorously, envisioning it as a perpetually “under construction” site that frustrates Anger, one of Riley’s primary emotions.
“And Anger was like, ‘When are they gonna start building that place?! It just keeps sitting there!’ They haven’t made any movement on it. It’s such a funny idea. We had trouble figuring out why in this particular story. I won’t tell you everything about it, there’s some other stuff about it that’s really funny. So I’m like, ‘This has to be used somehow in the future.'”
