Strikes from Joe Taylor and Derensili Sanches Fernandes had put the Terriers on course for victory in the Yorkshire derby
Huddersfield Town head coach Martin Drury insists his side “move forward with belief” despite their late setback against Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.
Strikes from Joe Taylor and Derensili Sanches Fernandes had put the Terriers on course for victory in the Yorkshire derby at Accu Stadium on Saturday, but the Owls netted twice in the final minutes to salvage a 2-2 draw.
Ibane Bowat’s 88th-minute own goal halved the deficit, before Jamal Lowe netted from the penalty spot in the eighth minute of stoppage time to deny Town the victory.
Referee Edward Duckworth initially gave a corner before overturning his decision and awarding a spot kick, but Drury insisted to BBC Radio Leeds: “No feeling sorry for ourselves whatsoever, we got what we deserved. I don’t believe in luck or bad luck in football, you get what you deserve.
“We were excellent for long periods of the game, we were ahead because of how good we were and how dominant we were. I felt it was very one-sided for long periods, and I felt our players demonstrated a lot of the things that we’re looking for from our team, which is why we got ourselves 2-0 in front.
“Conceding the first goal was disappointing, and the manner after that, we didn’t work hard enough to stop crosses after that, we didn’t make first contacts in the box after that. Up until that point, we’d been outstanding in those things, and we’d been really aggressive and more front-footed.
“There were a couple of moments second half where I’d have liked us to have been more aggressive, more front-footed, and there were a couple of times when we didn’t, and I need to help us ensure that our mentality is that we keep pushing.
“It’s frustrating, but I’m also filled with a lot of belief and confidence. A team that I’ve been told is really fancied to be title contenders for this league, and I felt for 60 minutes in particular, I thought we were outstanding. We created numerous chances, big chances yet again, they didn’t have one shot in the first half, not one shot, so we got ourselves in a good position.
“We need to have a mentality that that’s not enough, we have to win the game of football, so it’s frustrating, but we move forward with belief on what we showed for long periods of time at an early stage in the season, that we’re in a good place, and we’ll keep working.”
