The animated revival of the beloved sitcom Everybody Hates Chris, titled Everybody Still Hates Chris, is moving ahead and several familiar voices are now confirmed to return. Acclaimed comedian Chris Rock will continue his role as narrator on the animated series, with original stars Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold, who played the titular character’s parents in the live-action show, will also return to voice their respective characters, Variety has revealed.
“I’m very excited to introduce the world to another funny side of my childhood,” Chris Rock, who will also executive produce the animated series, said in a statement.
Alongside these familiar names, the rest of the main ensemble cast of Everybody Still Hates Chris has also now been revealed. Tim Johnson Jr. (Pacific Rim: Uprising) will take over from original star Tyler James Williams as young Chris, who is described as “a nerd who wants to be cool but he’s outshined by his younger brother, tortured by his little sister, and foiled by his cheapskate dad.”
The rest of the young cast includes Ozioma Akagha (Marvel’s What If…?) as Tonya, “Chris’ feisty baby sister, with the face of an angel and the heart of a demon, who gets along with her middle brother Drew but leaps at any chance to get Chris in trouble,” Terrence Little Gardenhigh (Danger Force) as the voice of Drew, the “golden child of the family who is the epitome of Black Excellence: handsome, athletic, a ladies man, taller and cooler than his older brother Chris,” and lastly Gunnar Sizemore (Kung Fu Panda) as Greg, Chris’s only friend at school “who is girl-obsessed, status conscious and raised by a single dad.”
Terry Crews & Tichina Arnold Will Return as Chris’ Parents in the Animated Revival
Terry Crews, meanwhile, will slip back into the overalls (this time in animated form) as Julius, Chris’ father “a gentle giant with a relentless work ethic, and cheap. He grew up dirt poor, so he knows the cost of everything down to the penny” alongside Tichina Arnold as Chris’ mother, Rochelle, who is described as a “smart, strong-willed, and has a nurturing spirit, but she can also be hot-headed, especially when it comes to her kids. She tolerates zero nonsense, so she quits more jobs in a month than most people do in a lifetime.”
Created by Chris Rock and Ali LeRoi, Everybody Hates Chris ran for four seasons between 2005 and 2009, staring life on UPN before moving to The CW. The series was a critical hit, earning several Emmy Award and Golden Globe nominations, and winning an NAACP Image Award in 2007. Much like the original series, Everybody Still Hates Chris will be inspired by the life of Chris Rock and “his experience growing up as a skinny nerd in a large working-class family in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, during the late 1980s.”
Sanjay Shah is the showrunner for Everybody Still Hates Chris and revealed the reason why he wanted to job…
“I wanted this job to get free tickets to a Chris Rock stand up show, but we ended up making something we’re proud of that is true to the original series we all loved.”
Everybody Still Hates Chris
is due to debut on Comedy Central later this year and will be available to stream on
Paramount+
at a later date.
