Released in 2023, Blue Beetle serves as one of the final entries in the much-maligned DCEU. However, the fan-favorite superhero is already set to return in James Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, and for good reason. A standalone coming-of-age origin story, Blue Beetle impressed critics and audiences alike with its lovable protagonist, led by Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña. Fortunately, it’s never been easier to catch up on the DC film, as it’s now streaming for free on Tubi.
Blue Beetle is now available to stream at no cost with ads on Tubi starting Feb. 1. The film follows Jaime Reyes (Maridueña), a young college graduate who is imbued with superpowers when he comes into contact with an alien relic, the Scarab. Guided by a Jarvis-like voice, Jaime has the ability to create any kind of weapon he can imagine (sort of like Green Lantern), as well as flight. The first live-action movie to feature a Latino superhero, Blue Beetle is an action-packed adventure that finds its heart firmly within the center of the Reyes family. Featuring minimal references to the grander universe, it is a standalone film that does not require any extracurricular viewing to understand. Upon watching, it’s quite easy to see why Gunn decided to keep Blue Beetle as a part of the rebooted DCU.
In addition to Maridueña, the cast of Blue Beetle features Bruna Marquezine as Jenny Kord, Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord, Raoul Max Trujillo as Carapax, Belissa Escobedo as Milagros Reyes, Damián Alcázar as Alberto Reyes, Elpidia Carrillo as Rocío Reyes, George Lopez as Rudy Reyes, Adriana Barraza as Nana Reyes, Becky G as Khaji-Da, and Harvey Guillén as Dr. Sanchez. Behind the scenes, Puerto Rican director Ángel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings), helmed the superhero film based on a script by Gareth Dunnet Alcocer (Miss Bala). Check out the synopsis for Blue Beetle below:
“Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.”
Will Blue Beetle Return in the DCU?
It’s been confirmed that Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes aka Blue Beetle will indeed form part of the DCU, which is being jumpstarted by James Gunn’s Superman. In fact, Blue Beetle is set to headline his own animated series, with Maridueña and presumably the rest of the film’s cast reprising their roles. Maridueña recently confirmed his participation in the upcoming “anime” from DC Studios, expressing his gratitude for being able to continue the role despite the closure of the DCEU.
“There’s only one Blue Beetle. I’m so excited to get to continue the story of Jaime is an honor and I just can’t wait to see where the heck he goes. It’s still so early, but I just know it’s about to be the next craziest anime.”

James Gunn’s clarification has left fans even more confused.
Along with leading his own animated show set in the DCU, there is a good chance Blue Beetle could return in live-action in the in-development Booster Gold HBO series. Although details have remained scarce surrounding the project, rumors have run rampant that Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani is crossing the pond to play the blue and gold time traveler for DC Studios. Meanwhile, Danny McBride, who is finishing up his HBO comedy The Righteous Gemstones this year, has long been rumored to form part of the writing team for Booster Gold.
