History Misbehaves: Time Travel Radio takes listeners on a comic journey through Acomb’s multi-layered and “occasionally bizarre” history.
The project was commissioned by Explore York Libraries and Archives and co-created by Acomb residents, writer Paul Birch and director Kate Valentine.
The show was developed through a series of workshops at Acomb Explore from October 2024 to January 2025, with the help of sound recordist Tom Smith.
The creative team took inspiration from the Acomb Manor Court Rolls of 1680 and the Acomb and District Herold community magazine from the late 1980s, copies of which are held in Explore’s archives.
Time Travel Radio reveals some surprising similarities between Acomb’s past and present.
The show captures everyday life in the 1680s and 1980s, with reimaginings of 1680s court cases, humorous reviews of 1980s news reports, and nods to long-gone local businesses all featured.
Modern Acomb residents also share their own personal reflections, bringing perspectives from different generations to the production.
Acomb residents of all ages were involved in the creative process, and for some, it was a transformative experience.
One participant said: “I was moved and warmed by the fun and kindness in everything we did.
“Some activities were very daunting – role-playing in front of strangers, being recorded whilst doing so – but over the sessions, such a good supportive energy developed between us that this became a confidence booster.”
Director Kate Valentine, of Digital Drama, was equally delighted with the project.
She said: “Time Travel Radio brings Acomb to life in the 1680s and 1980s, combining humour with fond memories in a familiar radio format.
“It has been fantastic to work with local actors and writer Paul Birch to bring these stories to life.
“We can’t wait for audiences to hear these monologues online and recognise Acomb’s heritage in a whole new way.”
