York BID wants to add more lighting to the end of a snickleway emerging between 9 and 11 High Ousegate, because a previously installed set does not illuminate far enough, according to planning documents.
The improvements are part of the business-led partnership’s York Snickleways project.
The narrow passage runs from Peter Lane and is known as Le Kyrk Lane, according to planning documents submitted to the council and the proposal would install additional LED festoon lighting to make the route safer day and night.
Existing lighting approved in September last year stops short of the High Ousegate entrance which results in a dark area, the planning documents say.
Either side of the snickleway are grade II listed buildings, dating from 1705, currently home to Lakeland and Byron.
Following an environmental audit by North Yorkshire Police, York BID propose to improve lighting in York snickleways to make these pedestrian routes safer and more attractive throughout the day and night, the documents say.
In an application for Listed Building Consent for alterations, extension or demolition of a listed building, an eyebolt would be installed on the side of the building occupied by Byron to extend the lighting to the end of the passageway.
In a heritage design and access statement from Woodhall Planning Conservation including with the documents, it is not considered that the architectural and historic interest of the buildings would be harmed.
