Experience the understated luxury and laid-back charm of these five incredible island resorts.
Africa is renowned for its fantastic wildlife and vast savannas, but it also boasts some truly stunning islands. Whether you’re seeking an idyllic escape or the perfect place to unwind after a memorable safari adventure, they tick all the right boxes.
From private beach lounges to a personal butler attending to your every need, these island retreats promise a luxurious stay in harmony with nature. Here are five of our favorite hidden gems, where you can enjoy a more intimate and exclusive experience.
1
Fanjove Island, Tanzania
Best time to visit: June to March
Fanjove is the smallest of the five islands in the Songo Songo archipelago, and you can explore the entire island in about an hour!
The eco-friendly Laba Fanjove Island resort is just an hour’s flight from Dar es Salaam. Each villa has been built using locally sourced materials like teak, palm leaves and coral stone.
Best things to do: Relax on the veranda of your private villa, soaking in the ocean views and beautiful sunsets. You can also go snorkeling, kayaking, and birdwatching, and enjoy a romantic evening cruise on a traditional dhow.
Our most enchanting moment: Being ‘welcomed’ by a group of spinner and bottlenose dolphins as your boat approaches the island.
2
Denis Private Island, Seychelles
Best time to travel: All year round, but April to October is ideal
If you truly want to get away from it all, we recommend the idyllic Denis Island. With no cell signal, no Wi-Fi in the rooms, and no cable TV, this private island in Africa offers pure, unplugged relaxation.
The villas of this secluded resort, with their handcrafted furniture and polished wooden floors, reflect the Seychelles’ colonial heritage. The open-air bathrooms and private garden courtyards immerse you more deeply in your natural surroundings.
Best things to do: Try your hand at fishing, follow turtle tracks along the beach, or explore the island’s scenic trails by bicycle or on foot.
Our most enchanting moment: Spotting rare endemic birds such as the Seychelles magpie-robin and the Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher during a walk around the island.
3
Mnemba Island, Zanzibar
Best time to visit: June to March
The private island of Mnemba offers powder-soft white sands, crystal-clear waters, and is perfect if you love diving and snorkeling.
&Beyond Mnemba Island has 12 open-plan bandas (beach bungalows) that are designed to reflect the region’s rustic charm. Every bungalow also comes with its own private beach lounge that gives you direct access to the shore.
Best things to do: Keep an eye out for shy dolphins in the shallows, or take part in conservation projects like coral restoration and artificial reef building.
Our most enchanting moment: Watching the hatchlings of the rare green sea turtles emerge from their eggs on the beach.
4
Benguerra Island, Mozambique
Best time to visit: April to October
If you’re seeking the ultimate relaxation, head to the remote islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. The region is home to some of Africa’s most pristine coral reefs, and feels like a luxurious oasis at the edge of the world.
The Azura Benguerra Island Lodge is located on the archipelago’s second-largest island, Ilha de Benguerra. Each of its 20 individually designed villas comes with its own private pool and butler service, ensuring absolute privacy and comfort for you.
Best things to do: Marvel at the colorful marine life of Two-Mile Reef, spot turtles on Paradise Island, and witness the humpback whale migration, which takes place between July and September.
Our most enchanting moment: The helicopter ride from Vilanculos is a visual treat! Soar over vast sandbanks and take in the Indian Ocean shimmering in every shade of blue.
5
Mangénie Island, Mauritius
Best time to visit: All year round, but May to November is ideal
Located on the pristine east coast of Mauritius. the private island of Ilot Mangénie is part of Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa. Gaze out at the picturesque Trou d’Eau Douce Bay from the resort’s secluded beach, rejuvenate yourself in its tranquil spa and savor exceptional meals at the beachfront restaurant.
We recommend the Frangipani suites, which are set on a private islet, include butler service, and offer exclusive access to an adults-only pool.
Best things to do: Admire your scenic surroundings on an e-bike ride, or enjoy a guided tour to explore the island’s mangrove ecosystems along the coast.
Our most enchanting moment: Teeing off at the scenic 18-hole golf course at Ile aux Cerfs, which is just off the shore.
