4 smart ways to get more life out of it

Phone upgrades are inevitable for most of us, whether that’s every two years, three, or whenever the itch hits. And while buying a new phone feels great, it doesn’t mean your old one is suddenly useless. Sure, it might be slower, the battery might not hold a charge like it used to, and it’s probably done with software updates, too. But it’s still got a screen, a camera, a microphone, and storage — and every one of those can be put to work in some way. It mostly comes down to the phone’s condition and how creative you’re willing to get with it.

Not everyone likes to carry two phones, but if you can manage it, it’s a great way to split your personal and work life. You can keep your photos, messages, and apps completely separate from work, which also helps with focus.

Another underrated use case is turning the phone into an Android Auto display for a car or bike that doesn’t already have one built in. You simply need to mount your phone somewhere convenient and install an app like Open Headunit — it’s paid on the Play Store but available for free on GitHub. It can connect your old phone to the main one over a cable or wirelessly, and you’ve basically added Android Auto to your ride for free.

And if neither of these appeals to you, you can keep your old phone as a backup. If you or someone in your family ever loses their main phone or cracks the screen, a spare phone can be handy until the replacement is sorted. And no, it doesn’t have to sit idle in the meantime — it can still earn its keep as a dedicated gadget.

Your old phone may no longer cut it as a daily driver, but it can still work great for a lot of other things. For instance, you can use it as a dash cam for your car with an app like Droid Dashcam. It essentially turns your phone into a fully functional recorder while also showing you useful details like GPS coordinates and vehicle speed. Mount it on the dashboard, plug it into the car charger, and you can forget about it until you actually need the footage.

If you don’t drive or already have a dash cam, an app like AlfredCamera can turn that same phone into a security camera. This could be handy for your front door, driveway, backyard, garage, or anywhere else you need it. As long as it can stay charged, it’ll stream the feed straight to your main phone.  The same setup can work for a baby monitor too, if that’s what you need more.

Turning your old phone into a dedicated music player is another idea that makes sense. Load it up with your favorite playlists for offline use, and you’ve got a distraction-free player for the gym or a run. The best part is that your music won’t be interrupted by notifications every few minutes. Heck, you can even dress the phone as an iPod Classic, complete with a click wheel and all.

If you’re more into books than music, the phone can double as an e-reader. All you have to do is set up a minimalist launcher, tweak a few display settings, and grab e-book reader apps like Moon+ Reader and Readera. This works best on a tablet, honestly, but a phone can do the job just fine.

Your old phone can also double as a universal remote. Most TVs have their own dedicated app, but if you have multiple TVs around the house, something like Universal TV Remote is more convenient.

If you’re parked in front of a PC all day like me, your old phone can also take on a few jobs that would otherwise mean buying extra hardware. If you attend a lot of meetings, for instance, you can ditch that mediocre webcam on your laptop and use your phone’s camera instead.

On phones running Android 14 or later, the webcam mode is built in, so you only have to plug it into your PC and choose Webcam instead of Charging only or File transfer. If you want to skip the cable, apps like DroidCam or Camo can do the same thing wirelessly. DroidCam also lets your phone double as a microphone, which is a real upgrade over whatever’s built into most laptops.

You can even give your PC a second screen. Apps like Spacedesk let you extend or mirror your desktop onto your phone, so you’ve basically got yourself a portable monitor. My personal favorite, though, is using the phone as a Stream Deck. You need an app like Touch Portal for this, which turns the screen into a customizable grid of shortcuts and macros.

Finally, if you’re short on USB drives and SSDs because they’re too expensive at this point (thanks, AI boom), your phone can also double as portable storage. You can treat it like a 128GB or 256GB external drive to back up and transfer files. The main benefit here is that you can transfer files wirelessly with LocalSend or Quick Share.

If none of the above sounds appealing enough, selling it is probably your best move. Right now, old phones are worth more than they have been in years (again, thanks to the AI boom). So as long as it’s not broken, you could get decent cash for it on SellCell, Swappa, eBay, or Facebook Marketplace. Trading it in for a new phone can get you an even better deal, since you’re stacking the trade-in value with an exchange bonus on top. Either way, it beats letting it sit in a drawer and losing value over time.

Another obvious option is to pass it down. If the phone’s still in good shape, give it to a family member or friend who needs it more. And if that’s not an option, you can donate it to a charity or recycle it properly.

These are just a few ideas, of course. The point is, there’s almost always something your old phone can do other than gathering dust. It can be a bedside clock, a smart home dashboard, a gaming device, a media server, and loads of other things. As I said earlier, it really comes down to how creative you can get.
