Directed by Erik Bloomquist, Ten Minutes to Midnight is a vampire thriller movie that centers around Amy Marlowe, a beloved late-night radio DJ who gets bitten by a rabid bat and begins to experience strange and terrifying events during her last broadcast. As the night changes, Amy undergoes mental and physical transformation, and with her increasingly violent behaviour, she terrorizes her co-workers.
A Tense and Atmospheric Vampire Thriller
A taut, character-driven vampire flick, Ten Minutes to Midnight offers an eerie take on the genre. Its highlight is that it showcases the impressive range of its lead actress, Caroline Williams. Trapped in the confined space of the radio studio and slowly turning into a vampire, her character creates a palpable sense of claustrophobia and fear that’s essential to the narrative. Overall, the movie’s focus on the psychological layers of the protagonist makes it more than a typical vampire movie.

This movie deserves a spot on the list for its clever mix of humor and horror. Rather underrated, this French-language Canadian horror follows Sasha, a young vampire who struggles with the ability to kill and thus finds it difficult to sustain herself. When her parents cut off her blood supply and Sasha accidentally stumbles upon a teenager named Paul, who has lost all will to live, the two strike a friendship where Sasha helps Paul fulfil his last wishes and Paul promises to give up his life for her.
Love Story of Two Misfits
Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person earns its place for the clever integration of human drama and emotion themes of empathy and mortality into its vampire lore. Directed by Ariane Louis-Seize, it provides an unusual perspective that’s equal parts moving and captivating. Sara Montpetit and Félix-Antoine Bénard’s performances are subtle when they need to be and arresting at other times, and their chemistry is genuine.

‘Renfield’ (2023)

April 14, 2023
- Runtime

93 minutes
A fairly recent addition to the vampire movies of the 2020s is Renfield. Inspired by characters of Bram Stoker’s famed novel Dracula, the movie reimagines the story of Dracula’s loyal servant, Renfield. Apparently, after centuries of servitude and obeying things like finding prey, Renfield dreams of a life outside of his master’s shadow. He joins a support group and tries to break free of the codependent relationship he has with Dracula.
Modern Twist on Classic Mythology
By placing the spotlight on the often-overlooked servant-turned-reluctant-hero, this movie delivers a lot of irreverent fun. Nicholas Hoult plays the titular character and Nicolas Cage stars as Dracula (one of his most entertaining and memorable recent turns), each plays off their strengths in effortlessly humorous and horrifying ways. Awkwafina’s sarcastic traffic cop also adds a refreshing energy to the movie. And of course, Renfield has some genuinely shocking kills.

El Conde is a satirical black comedy horror that combines historical events with vampire fiction. Directed by Pablo Larraín, it sees Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet reimagined as a 250-year-old vampire seeking death. From portraying his life and his interactions with his family to his overwhelming presence turning the very nun sent to exorcise him into a vampire, the movie covers it all.
A Poetic and Satirical Vampire Drama
A distinct entry into the modern vampire genre, El Conde abandons all traditional tropes in favor of a deeply satirical and terrifying character study. The film’s measured pacing, atmospheric direction, a sense of melancholy, and unforgettable performances from Jaime Vadell and Gloria Münchmeyer enhance its impact. That said, the movie’s central theme about a vampire grappling with the burden of his immortality is innovative and mesmerizing.

Visually gripping and filled with awesome kills, Abigail is a horror-comedy that begins with a group of killers kidnapping a young ballet dancer, who is also the daughter of a powerful underworld figure, for ransom. They lock her in a secluded mansion and wait, but soon realize that Abigail isn’t an ordinary girl. She’s a bloodthirsty vampire about to go on a spree.
Exquisite Gore Infused with Ballet
Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Abigail is both campy and chilling. It’s one of the best horror movies of 2024 as it creates an entertaining and suspenseful viewing experience for the audience. The direction is taut and the setting of the isolated mansion increases tension. Also worth praising is Alisha Weir’s performance as Abigail, with supporting turns from Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kevin Durand, and more.

‘Nosferatu’ (2024)

A stunning remake of the 1922 silent film of the same name, which was inspired by Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, Dracula, Nosferatu tells the story of Count Orlok. It begins with real estate agent Thomas Hutter, played by Nicholas Hoult, arriving in Transylvania to negotiate a deal with the enigmatic Count Orlok, portrayed by Bill Skarsgård. But the more he learns about Orlok’s true nature, the less his chances for survival are.
Eggers’ Artistic Standout in the Vampire Genre
Written and directed by Robert Eggers, Nosferatu retains the haunting atmosphere and gothic aesthetics of the original and infuses it with contemporary elements of filmmaking. Eggers’ direction is so precise it’s almost surgical. And combined with searing performances from Hoult and Bill Skarsgård, it creates a sense of dread and foreboding in every frame. The vampiric elements rooted in the original Nosferatu mythology are executed with natural flair, but are just as frightening.
