Adam Hinshelwood brought in his third signing of the Summer on Wednesday evening, securing the signing of centre-back Palmer after the defender turned down a new deal with Sky Bet League Two side Chesterfield.
He becomes the second player to do so who has gone on to join York, following on from midfielder Ollie Banks, added to by the signing of Alex Newby from Altrincham.
Derbyshire Times reporter Liam Norcliffe had nothing but positive words to say about City’s most recent acquisition when speaking to the Press.
Q: What sort of player can the City supporters expect from Ash Palmer?
A: “A fully-committed no-nonsense defender and a top professional who keeps himself in great shape.
“At Chesterfield, he was always said to be at the front of the running in pre-season.
“He is dominant in both boxes and is probably a bit of an old school defender who will head and kick everything and has solid positional sense.”
Q: Under Adam Hinshelwood, City have become accustomed to playing a patient possession style. Will Palmer fit into this system?
A: “Chesterfield also played it out from the back so it won’t be something new to him.
“I wouldn’t say it is his biggest strength but he will be steady enough.
“He’s not going to be pinging 60-yard passes but he will keep it ticking over.”
Q: Palmer has previously captained Stockport County, so what sort of leadership expertise can he bring to City?
A: “I would say that he goes about his business with minimal fuss.
“He’s probably someone who leads by example rather than vocally.
“You probably won’t see him give out any rollockings.
“But he won’t have no problems fitting into the York dressing room and he will be a popular and respected member of the group.”
Q: During his time as a Chesterfield player, what are some of his moments that standout?
A: “Like Ollie Banks, Palmer will be welcomed back with open arms after playing his part in helping Chesterfield return to the EFL.
“He put in some man of the match displays along the way and chipped in with goals from set-pieces.
“On that note, that is a big strength of his and York have added another string to their bow by bringing him in.”
Q: What sort of character is Palmer off-of-the-pitch?
A: “Overall, I would say York have made a shrewd signing.
“He brings title-winning experience, is a reliable defender and will add a bit more steel to the back-line as well as a few goals.”
