Music manager Ryan Gentles and artists Bec Lauder and the Thing are the latest guests on the SPIN Presents Lipps Service podcast, during which they discuss with host Scott Lipps their unique experiences in the New York music scene over the past two decades.
In part one of a two-part episode, the first conversation is with Gentles, who managed the Strokes from their days as an unknown local club band. He relates stories about helping secure the quintet a major-label record deal and craft their image, as well as navigating their quick rise to international stardom. Gentles also shares his thoughts on the current state of the music business and the role played by social media in discovering new artists.
Next, Lipps talks with Bec Lauder about her career beginnings, favorite spots in New York and her top five 2000s artists from the scene. Finally, Lipps is joined by up-and-coming rock band the Thing to discuss their musical influences, the modern touring industry and how radio continues to play a role in bringing artists widespread exposure.
On the previous episode of Lipps Service, Lipps sat down with Live frontman Ed Kowalczyk to chat about the veteran band’s return to touring and the 30-year anniversary of their beloved album Throwing Copper.
Since it began in 2018, the acclaimed podcast has featured many of the biggest voices and personalities in music, including exclusive interviews with Anthony Kiedis, David Lee Roth, Hozier, Dove Cameron, Mick Fleetwood, Nikki Sixx, Perry Farrell, the Kills and many more. Every few weeks, a new episode of SPIN Presents Lipps Service is available wherever you listen to podcasts.
